November is recognized as National Senior Pet Month.
Texas Independent Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue is sharing a few stories over the next few weeks about our senior dogs. At the present time we have ten dogs that are ten years of age or older. In all honesty most of those that are over ten years old and have been here for most of their lives, think this is their permanent home and more than likely it is. For those that are 11-14 years old, dependent upon their health, they are living their best life here and we are happy to have offered them sanctuary in a loving peaceful world. We have another 5 that are around 7 or 8 years old AND three of them are looking high and low for their new families. That would be Bella, Copper and Murphy – none of which are Ridgebacks. Copper, Bella and Murphy did not know what a Ridgeback was until they arrived at TIRR Rescue.
There are many ways to support a senior pet. First and foremost, ADOPT one or FOSTER one! If this does not work in your world, consider just visiting at TIRR Rescue. We have plenty of seniors that would enjoy a short visit, a walk in the woods, a good brushing (well, maybe not all of them would like this), or just relaxing beside a human that gives them their very own attention. Of course we must include the financial support of our seniors. Seniors come with more expenses due to their health, special food/supplement needs, and medications.
Senior dog Murphy…
Murphy is a neutered male, 7 ½ years old. Obviously, he is not a Ridgeback. Believe us when we say he establishes his presence to any Ridgeback we introduce him to.
A little big dog if there ever was one and the smallest dog at the Rescue Ranch. Murphy’s pack has changed over the months and years. He is always welcoming of new pack mates. He lets them know right away that he is in charge. Once everyone recognizes the smallest dog at the Ranch is the leader of his pack, Murphy is ready to play! Murphy still looks like he should be wearing a derby hat with a stubby cigar sticking out his mouth.
Murphy is confident in himself and is strictly business when he meets anyone new. He is a collector of Nylabones and chew toys. Any crate or run that is left open is an invitation for him to take whatever he likes. It is so funny to watch this escapade – he is so proud of himself when he gets a bone and takes it to his own crate to deposit it.
Big confidence in a little package!
