A Word from Patches

A post on Facebook, a picture of a dog standing alone in the park.

A closer examination of the picture reveals a rather unique looking dog covered with scars.  These are not scratches, as the pictures reveal there is something major going on with this dog.  As various rescues discuss what breed he is and who might be able to take him, I have but one thought.  “It matters not the breed, the dog is in trouble and needs help, NOW!”

A few messages, a couple of texts and a couple of days of anxious waiting and another challenge is on its way to TIRR Rescue.  We met the people from Houston in a place called “West, Texas”.  The first meeting with the dog they called “Roo” was a pleasant surprise.  Not at all like a dog that had been running wild for over a month, friendly and anxious for human contact.  This dog was ready for rescue.  After several days of discussion concerning his name, we settled on “Patches” as he looks like a patch work quilt.

A trip to the vet reveals we were quite right in our assessment of a challenge for TIRR Rescue.  Along with the skin issues which will require a lot of baths and time to heal, Mr. Patches is heartworm positive along with an infestation of hookworms, whipworms and of course we must include Giardia.  He is now receiving meds for all the above, HW treatment scheduled, and baths started, the long journey to recovery has begun.

As for breed there is no more certainty than the source of his scars.  My years of experience with various breeds of dogs make me think that a good portion is Husky and his behavior confirms this.  The rest, we can only guess.  Perhaps Loup-Grou for the combination of Husky and such a creature could produce the sounds that are ever present with this dog.  He is not a barker, but he does communicate or at least tries loud and often.
